WG1 Field Phenotyping: Sensor Synergies for Biophysical Trait Retrievals

WG1 aims to contribute to resilient agriculture by bridging remote sensing (RS) and plant phenotyping (PP) for optimized vegetation trait monitoring. Collaboration and exchange between the two communities are expected to advance research and create innovations on both sides with respect to the development of multiple stress-resilient breeding lines and the monitoring and modeling of stress symptoms. The RS-based observation methods and analysis tools for field trials will help the phenotyping-related analysis to monitor the development of the experiments. WG1 will identify and develop practical synergies in (1) sensor technologies (2) data sharing and (3) data analysis.

Objectives

  1. Identify the gaps between sensors used in RS and PP for the purpose of their synergies for crop biophysical trait quantification of different genotypes in field trials
  2. Develop standard UAV metadata sharing approaches according to FAIR
  3. Provide software tools for integrating RS and PP data analyses and automated micro plot extraction supporting a variety of assessments in field trials
  4. Promote synergies between agriculture and forestry sectors by evaluating the transferability of adapted HTTP protocols for screening forest provenance trials and forest networks

Tasks

  1. Summer school on exemplarily experimental setup and data acquisition including analysis for breeding experiments and PA (both UAV and satellite scale together with WG2 and WG3) at the end of the first GP or beginning of the second GP
  2. Hackathon (3 days) in GP2 on feeding different data sets into improved computational geometry method-CGM (WG1+2): led by experts in different leaf-to-canopy level vegetation models and will contain UAV and nano-satellite data from different spectral domains and field data
  3. STSMs to investigate sensor synergies between RS and PP to better estimate plant traits. The STSMs will take place during GPs 2 – 3. At least one industry-research STSM is foreseen
  4. The joint WG1+WG4 summer training school on UAV field phenotyping uncertainty and standardization of best practices in a cross-cutting task with WG4 experts will take place during GP3

Deliverables

  1. Standardized protocols for plant trait analysis using UAV sensor synergies.
  2. The joint WG1+WG2 Hackathon will lead to a systematic-review paper to show good practice for data analysis and filling the gaps between RS and PP.
  3. A technical note/paper on challenges and solutions for sensor synergies between the sensors used by RS and PP communities.
